I always try to take time and thank any and all Gods out there for the little things. Like the few days we have here at this starbase. Ever since going through the Thymus Expanse especially, I've been inundated with work. Not just the regular duties of running the Science Department. That's enough by itself. But, I'm also involved in an ongoing project to formally classify wormholes.
You'd think this is an easy enough thing. I mean, we all know what a wormhole is right? Wrong. Try spelling it out. I mean, just laying the ground work for what is a wormhole, and what isn't ... that takes a lot of energy. I thought, when I was assigned this project, "Ah, no problem. Done in a week. We encounter all kinds of wormholes." But that's just not the case.
I mean, once you get past the gamma ray bursts which signify that it IS a wormhole compared to some other anomaly, then you get down to what kind is it? There are all kinds of different classifications that we are finding. The different radiation coming out of them help in that regard, as do the actual physical make up of the wormhole, such as size, origin, does it move or not. Add in any time variances and all the different subatomic particles, and what damage it can do to a starship, and you've got a huge mess.
But, we are slowly but surely plugging away at classification. Once this project is complete, it will give the rest of the Federation something to go by. Only minor adjustments after that. But till then, I've got a headache. I wish we could stay here longer, just so I could catch up, but ... *sigh* ... that isn't to be. We shove off from here in 48 hours tops.
