Nano-Probes

Vec walks down the hall looking for someone from science to help with his latest project. ~~Where would I find someone from science?~~ "BINGO!" He begins to run and enters the turbolift. He taps the key pad and the turbolift moves.

Jen is in her quarters, settling down with a cup of hot tea and her PADDs. She takes a sip of her coffee and puts it on the side table. She delves into her first PADD entitled "The joys of unicellular life"

Vec walks off the turbolift, "Lets see 1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . 4 . . . Jen's!" He pushes the door chime.

~Damn, I know that sound from somewhere. Oh, wait! Last time, Vec came through the ceiling ... can't have that happen!~ "Come on in!" She rises from her couch to see the door opening.

Walking in, Vec says, "'Ello!"

"Hey! How you doin? Are you all recovered from the surgery, now?"

"I'm fine," Vec says, smiling.

"Well, that's good to know!" Jen says, and glances at the couch, strewn with PADDs. "Ummm let me clear a spot for you to sit."

Grinning, Vec says, "Did you tamper with my holo-program to get even with me?" With a shake of his head and a small chuckle, "You and your PADDs."

While clearing the PADDs, she looks back over her shoulder and blushes. "You found that, huh?"

"Well, believe me I did not program 15 warbirds!" ~~I wonder what's next!!!~~

Most of the PADDs are picked up, a couple maybe pushed into the cushions. Laughing, Jen says, "So, now that I've found you someplace to sit, can I get you anything to drink? A little Blood Wine, maybe?"

"Not my favorite try........... Computer....... do you mind if I....... order us a drink?" Vec asks.

"Not at all ... you go on ahead, I've still got my tea," she smiles as she picks up her mug to show him.

"Computer 2 supplement 2000." Two large glasses of frozen drinks appear. He passes one to her. "Have one."

Taking it from him, "Well, OK ..."

"Nope, come on, it's not rat poison," he smiles.

She takes a tentative sip.

"By the way, I had the computer add frozen Gahk to yours," he said smiling.

"No, you didn't ...." she looks into her drink.

"No, I'm just kidding. Welcome to my world, sweet and delicious. By the way it does have large amounts of sugar and no alcohol."

"Oh, well, then I suppose it'll be OK .....I just won't be able to get to sleep easily tonight!"

Vec hands her about 6 PADDs out of his back pocket. "I hate to do this but....... I need your help when you have time. We will need to send data transfers over huge distances OK ...

She looks at him, wondering why he's asking about data transfer ...

wouldn't that be for someone at OPS?

"I need to know if that," he points to the PADDs, "Will work. I'm a Telepath. I need the subspace antenna, that is part of your job.

Well, I'll try ... she scans over the first PADD, and sits down onto the couch while reading. "Um hmm ..."

"I need you to be able to tell me what the hell is wrong with my design."

"Well,?First off, I'd try a different frequency.....You're trying to do this at a high wavelength ... won't work well."

"In a nut shell I want to drop modified photon torpedoes for a relay system. The antimatter in the torpedo would act as a power source. We would have a communication network on each torpedo, then by sending the message via relay, get it to the base. I will try to use a chain effect to send the message down the line. The problem is we are talking a minimum of 1-5 gigaquads of data AND this is classified data."

"That should work ... I'd just try using a lower frequency for your message.

Hmmm.....encrypted, I would suppose?"

"No other ship should be able to get the message . . . yes encrypted, but no code is unbreakable."

"But whoever you want to have the message would know how to decode it? That is very true ... But, if you boost the power, it should get there very quickly..........Too quickly for someone else to even know it's there."

"What about PADD 4?" Vec asks.

She flips to that PADD, and starts reading.

"It suggests that we could use the deflector and sensors to double the range of the communications as not to waste as many torpedoes."

"Hmm . . . now, you're planning on using the torpedoes to pick up the signal, and send it back, right?" Jen asks.

He sips his drink, "Yes."

"All right then ... It will definitely work ... But, you've gotta have your torpedoes cloaked."

"Check PADD 6. All the cloaking protocols."

She finds PADD 6 and reads it. "I only see one flaw with the cloaking device ... I've got this on a PADD here somewhere ... using this kind of cloak, it may become unstable if chronoton particles hit it. Not that it is likely ... but it could happen at a most in opportune time."

"What if we put anti-croniton shielding around it?"

"How long could you make it last, though?" she asks.

"Well, with a standard torpedo's antimatter supply . . . rationed . . . I'd say almost a year and a half, maybe two years."

"Anti-chronoton shielding is still a new technology, and that's still a lot of work to keep them up and running."

Smiling, he hands her PADD 7.

She sighs, takes it, and looks.

"Using nanites to fix problems.......... and they have their own power supply."

She scrunches her forehead in concentration. "Wow ... this is fascinating ... can I keep this PADD for a few days to absorb this?"

"Yes, all of them."

"I'll tell you what I think afterwards ...I don't know that much about nanites ...." She settles into the couch, pouring over the PADD.

He smiles and stands, "I guess I will leave you to your PADDs.

She grunts, then remembers she has a guest. "Oh! I'm sorry!"

"Good bye Jen," he smiles at her name.

"Yes, thank you ... I'll get in touch with you in a few days!"

"No need to be sorry... OK.......................computer exit 114."

"Thanks for thinking of me for help!"

He shimmers out, and she looks bewildered, shrugs her shoulders, and settles back into the couch with her new PADDs. "Ahhhh . . . "
